How the Project Came into Being
The Project was started many years ago by a number of Christians from various churches in Woking offering sandwiches and soup to people sleeping “rough”. This developed into a “Winter Watch” project supported by Shelter providing emergency accommodation over the winter period (November – February) using various properties loaned to us by the Council. This was developed further by the “Night Watch” programme which operated for a longer period of the year and also offered some supported “move-on” accommodation.
Eventually the York Road Project was formed in 2001 and was registered with the Charity Commission. In accommodation leased to us and refurbished by Woking Borough Council at 1 York Road we now operate the Hostel and Day Centre all through the year. In 2010 we had expanded our staff to provide additional Support Services and also brought additional "move-on" accommodation into use comprising two flats at 33A & B Guildford Road and a house in Fairfax Road, Old Woking. In 2011 we teamed up with Woking YMCA and leased a further 14 flats at Grove Court in Grove Road, 7 of which are allocated to the York Road Project for "move-on" accommodation
