'Sleep In' as we 'Sleep Out'

On the evening of Friday 8th October some of our staff and volunteers will be sleeping out in Woking town centre and we will be coming live throughout the evening on our social media channels @YorkRoadProject.

During the event we will be sharing stories, taking part in a Q&A, holding a raffle and discussing the work we do and why it is so important to continue to raise awareness of homelessness not just locally but nationally.

We are asking for the local community to join us on social media, helping us to raise awareness whilst fundraising by taking part and 'Sleeping in' from their own homes whether it be sleeping on their living room floor or in a hall way or sleeping in their gardens.

Do they have what it takes to 'Sleep In' as we 'Sleep Out'?

Participants can challenge themselves several ways whether it be grazing on snacks and bottled drinks without a hot meal or switching off from their usual TV and Radio routines to only join us on social media and participate ‘Sleeping in’.

It’s up to them what they do to challenge themselves, maybe they have a bright idea that ends up with them being the next Captain Tom but we will provide them with all the instructions on how to set up a fundraiser online so they can share it with their followers, friends and family which in turn will raise awareness of our charity and the work we do plus funds that we need as we come out of the pandemic setting our staff and clients have been so familiar with over the last 18 months.

“Government statistics estimated that during the pandemic the ‘Everyone In’ initiative provided accommodation & support to 90% of the people rough sleeping across the country. Here at York Road Project (YRP) we supported over 30 people a night in our temporary facility at HG Wells to make sure they didn’t rough sleep over the past 18 months. By doing the Sleep Out we want to continue to raise awareness that rough sleeping does exist, it can happen to anyone and really highlight the misunderstanding in society of why people become homeless. We are dedicated to ending homelessness and we believe that everyone deserves a home of their own”.

Recognising 'World Homelessness Day'

Our 'Sleep in' event runs into the weekend in recognition of World Homeless Day which is on Sunday 10th October. The concept of 'World Homeless Day' emerged from online discussions between people working to respond to homelessness from various parts of the world. The Inaugural World Homeless Day was marked on the 10th of October 2010 and since its founding, World Homeless Day has been observed every year on the 10th of October.

Radio Woking 'YRP takeover':

Stephen Ireland (Community Fundraiser) at York Road Project will be hosting a radio show on Radio Woking from 10pm Friday 8th October until 9am Saturday 9th October.

Radio Woking have always been supportive of York Road Project’s work so the show with Stephen will take listeners through music of the last 20 years as that is how long York Road Project has been a registered charity. During the show, Stephen will also interview staff and volunteers of York Road Project, get listeners questions answered and play the communities song requests.

York Road Project can be listened to via DAB across Woking and surrounding areas and online at RadioWoking.co.uk or via the Radio Woking and Tunedin apps.

Will Stephen be able to stay awake and make it through the night whilst in Woking town centre? Of course he will!  Tune in from 10pm on Friday 8th October and get involved.
