Winter Weather Provision
York Road Project monitors the weather forecast from the 1st of November until the 31st of March every year. If the temperature goes below 0 degrees (including the feels like temperature) we activate a Surrey-wide protocol which was until recently called SWEP (Severe Weather Emergency Provisions). This provision is to ensure that anyone who is rough sleeping in the Woking area is offered emergency accommodation during the cold weather period.
Our Outreach Team will go out to known rough sleeper locations and actively encourage those they find to come in out of the cold. It can take several attempts for some of our clients to engage with us, we take with us flasks of warm drinks, clothing items such as socks, thermals and sleeping bags but we are skilled in the work we do and eventually, even those who are reluctant at first decide that a warm meal and a safe space inside is better than another night in a tent, shed or vehicle.
This year due to the pandemic we have continued to keep all the Pods open at HG Wells Conference Centre so that clients accessing under Winter Weather know they have a stable, safe space to get the support they need to end the cycle of homelessness. In previous years when SWEP was implemented, emergency accommodation would only be offered for the nights the temperature stayed below zero. YRP decided that they would use the temporary facilities we are in with the support of Woking Borough Council to offer cold weather provision throughout the whole of the winter months and work intensively with clients to sustain within the accommodation, applying for benefits, making appointments to see and register with GP, get bank accounts set up and much more.
The pandemic has had an impact on YRP as a charity and we have continued to offer anyone who needs our support a bed here at HG Wells & Woking Hotel. Having the amount of bed spaces we currently have has meant clients don’t have to worry about having to leave at the end of Winter Weather.
As with all the services we deliver we rely on the help of the local community. Here are three things you can do to help us as we help those requiring our support through experiencing homelessness or rough-sleeping:
1) Let us know
If you know of anyone rough sleeping in Woking or the surrounding areas there are a number of ways you can let us know. Call us on 01483 728739, e-mail us via [email protected] or if the person is in a different area than Woking, you can let a local service know via Streetlink.org.uk - Providing as much information as possible helps us find and support the rough-sleeping individual quicker.
2) Help us out
Whether you'd like to help us out with items on our Amazon wish-list or make a monetary donation your support helps us as we continue to help our clients through these continued unprecedented times. To find out the best way to help, visit our donate to YRP page.
3) Spread the word
Let your friends, family and acquaintances know about York Road Project and how we are working to defeat homelessness and rough-sleeping in Woking and the surrounding areas. We'd always recommend you point anyone you wish to learn about us to our website in the first instance or @YorkRoadProject on all major social media channels.
