YRP Homeless Choir closes national conference.

The York Road Project Homeless Choir were proud to be invited to perform at the Homeless Link National conference in Leicestershire last week.  It was an incredible opportunity for the choir members and although they were very nervous, the performance was a roaring success!

They sang a total of ten songs including 'Something inside so strong' by Labi Siffre, 'Imagine' by John Lennon and 'Happy' by Pharrell Williams.  The words of Imagine were rewritten by the clients and became 'Imagine you're not homeless'.  There were few dry eyes in the audience and the choir received a standing ovation!

Our choir is about fun and inclusion and is a regular part of the Day Centre timetable.  It doesn't matter if you can sing or not, read or not or if you haven't had a rehearsal as you have just moved into the shelter.  We believe that everyone can participate and everyone can gain a sense of achievement.  All the way home, the choir members were buzzing and as a celebration they went out for a meal.  This sort of activity is so powerful and can challenge the myth that homeless people cannot contribute to their community.

Special thanks as ever to Margaret Roberts who generously gives her time each week for choir rehearsal.

Our next 'gig' is at Rock Copthorne on 26th July.  If you would like further details, please call 01483 728761.  Click here to find out more about Homeless Link
