My world had been shattered and it left my life spiralling out of control. I’d previously been working full-time. I had a home and a family life but then things went from bad to worse. An accident at my job left me unable to work. I lost my home and my family were all seeking direction.
When I was working, my family had already had to endure more grief then most, so I knew I had to turn things around for myself and them. I had not heard much about York Road Project at that time and felt I was fighting a losing battle. Being unable to work and having nowhere to live, I started to feel the effects of mental fatigue.
Fortunately, I decided to present myself at York Road Project. I met staff who gave me a lifeline and soon I could see what I needed to do to turn things around. I gained my confidence back and with the support of staff, began doing the things that needed to be done.
The next 17 months came with ups and downs. It was a time of mental and physical discovery where I learnt about my strengths and weaknesses. I remained on the new path I had started. I discovered that I had severely injured my back during the accident at work and became aware of other physical health problems.
Without York Road Project, I would not have addressed these and they could have become unmanageable. York Road Project has helped me to highlight my strengths and to overcome my weaknesses. Fortunately, I never turned to alcohol or drugs to cope with my situation but could have easily have done so (as many do) without support.
I still have a long way to go but I have direction and a path to follow and that is all thanks to York Road Project.
